Description:

This is a display of the relationship between asana yoga postures and meditation which is termed as samyama by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. History tagged postures as yoga. Physical body positions are however the third development of yoga. When the positions are done to proficiency, a yogi/yogini realizes that there is a subtle energy, which is involved. That is the breath. Its discipline is listed as the fourth stage of yoga. Food and air enter the body though the mouth and nose respectively. Food is matter of fact, while air is subtle.

When one does body positions, that is one stage of yoga, the third stage. At some point in the practice of these positions, one may realize that there are subtle maneuvers, which occur when doing physical postures. There is a psyche which runs parallel to the physical body. When the physical system is operated, some subtle movements and shifts occur. To realize these one should focus internally. One should discover and map the energy configurations which produce the feelings. These psychological formations can serve as a spontaneous target for focus.

That means that from asana posture, a yogi/yogini can access the sixth and seventh stages of yoga, even without doing the fourth and fifth stages. The list of these stages are.

  • Third stage - asana positions
  • Fourth stage - pranayama breath infusion
  • Fifth stage – pratyahar sensual energy withdrawal
  • Sixth stage – dharana deliberate focus on transcendence
  • Seventh stage - dhyana spontaneous focus on transcendence

Position yoga is only one part of eight proficiencies, but it can be used to jump to the sixth stage. This book discuss the techniques for this accelerated practice. It may be considered that one should approach yoga to do its development in an orderly progress which gives mastery of one stage after the other in sequence. However, the experience is that someone may be disinclined for this. Many persons are attracted to the asana positions, either for body toning or health development. That is not listed as the purpose of yoga. At least Patanjali did not present that motive.

Still it is a fact that people are attracted to posture. Hence I present this technique for using the asana positions to graduate to meditative yoga.

Author's Comment:

Yoga inFocus is about using asana postures to develop dharana and dhyana meditation procedures. This volume indulges the reader to do yoga positions, and to extract from these, a higher feature of yoga which is meditative absorption.

There were and still are, many books which give illustrations of various postures. Usually for each pose a certain physical benefit is acclaimed. Those are sufficient for that purpose.

This is a new approach where the yogi/yogini can develop mental focus of energies in the subtle body.

Patanjali listed eight processes for yoga, with asana or positions being the third process. Most people who think about yoga, think of these poses. This book teaches how to use that third process, asana, to reach either the sixth, seventh or eighth stage. Acquire this book and learn how to use a position to develop advance meditation.
